Montgomery’s Capitol Building – one stop shop for history

stop shop

Did you know, for instance, that Montgomery became the state capital in 1846 after three other towns had proved undesirable due to geography, politics, or flooding?

The 1850 state capitol building is even affectionately known as “Goat Hill,” because the ground was originally used as a pasture. Note that the first White House of the Confederacy stands nearby, built by William Sayre.

The Capitol building itself is in the Greek Revival style and has beautiful and distinctive cantilever spiral stairwells.

Horace King, an ex-slave at the time, designed and built the ornate spiral staircase. A central support system was not needed in the design.

The building was added to in 1885, 1906, 1911 and 1992.  You can’t fail to notice the mural on the walls showing Alabama’s turbulent history.

These were actually built by Roderick MacKenzie, a Scottish-born artist who relocated to Alabama.  Amazing to know that he took four years, from 1926 to 1930, to produce them and they were done in his own little mobile studio.

From there they were shipped to Montgomery by railway and installed in the Capitol in 1930.

While you’re here, visit the old Governors Office, the Old State Supreme Court, the Old Supreme Court Library, the Rotunda, the old House of Representatives and the old Senate Chamber.  All are open to the public.

Note the six-pointed star outside on the top step, right of the door, between the middle columns. It’s not the Star of David, as you might think.

The building was the Capitol of the Confederacy in 1860 and a commemorative brass marker marks the exact location where Jefferson Davis stood outside on February 18, 1861 to take his oath of office as the first (and in fact, only) President of the Confederate States of America.

That marker happened to turn out like a Star of David.

The South (Mississippi, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana and Alabama) ceded (Feb 4, 1861) from the Union here in Montgomery at the state capitol.

They needed a president so that’s why they elected Jefferson Davis here. Texas ceded but did not come to Montgomery to meet.

The Capitol later became a National Historic Landmark in 1960.  The star stands in view of the Dexter Avenue Baptist Church where Martin Luther King, Jr., was to set about organizing the Civil Rights Movement that was to change America’s history,100 years later.

Walk inside the capitol and peer up at its stunning dome.

In the center of the Capitol building, you will also find paintings of Governor George Wallace and his wife, Lurleen Wallace, who briefly became governor herself before she died of cancer in 1968. It’s the first time a husband and wife both became governors.

My shopping adventures in United Kingdom

Let me first tell you about Dubai Airport.
We had only 4 hours between two flights at this amazing airport. The shopping complex at the Dubai International airport is an unique experience. And to all passengers who are planning to change flights at Dubai, I would suggest to plan an itinerary that at least half a day is available between arriving and departing flights.

This renowned facility offers 5,400 square metres of shopper’s paradise within the new terminal and is  known as Dubai Duty Free. Imagine a rectangular, centrally air conditioned, massive construction .Designed in a way that it resembles a ship .The runways & taxiways are seen at a glance from the cool glazing on either sides

In this mammoth building ,there are well organised shops offering wide range of top quality merchandise which include jewellery, electronics, cosmetics, liquor, luxury goods, sports equipment, designer wear, children’s’ wear, toys, books etc

Each commodity has been housed in a dedicated area. Dubai Duty Free was the first of its kind in the Middle East and has won over 70 international awards since 1983 and is known as a global trendsetter.

What we really liked that the visit to shopping becomes an easy affair between two flights. The airport logistics has been planned in such a way that after the security check, one is automatically led to departure lounge through this shopping plaza.

One can get a trolley in the arrival lounge, load the baggage and keep on walking in the entire shopping plaza without any restrictions. There are ramps, elevators and also the horizontal automated walk ways if you get tired.

The best way to clean a coffee maker

coffee shop

The true coffee lovers are demanding. They do not drink a cup of coffee just to start their day. They want to taste the perfect cup of coffee. For them, the process of making coffee is something like a ritual. They know the significance of keeping their coffee-maker clean. Purchasing the best coffee beans in the market is definitely a priority but, without a frequent cleaning of your coffee-maker, makes it almost impossible to enjoy the full coffee aroma. An everyday usage of your coffee-maker leads to an accumulation of previous oils from formerly brewed pots, hard mineral residues and other impurities that alter the taste and flavor of your cup of coffee. These are created in the inner parts of your coffee-maker, thus, just cleaning the coffee pot is not enough.

Cleaning your coffee-maker is something you should do at least once a month so as to ensure perfect taste for your coffee. All you need is vinegar and few simple steps.

(1) Just mix one part of vinegar and two parts of water until you fill up all the coffee pot and pour it in your coffee maker.

(2) Place a new filter in the filter basket in order to restrain the smell of vinegar of passing through to your coffee pot.

(3) Run your coffee-maker and leave it on until all the mixture is finished. If this is the first time you do this, leave your machine rest for 10-15 minutes while it is off and then repeat this step by adding a new mixture of vinegar and water.

(4) Repeat this step again but, this time, just use plain water. Let it cool off again and then repeat it, again with plain water, just to ensure that no smell from the solution is left in your coffee-maker. Follow this step again as many times as needed. Usually, two times are enough.

(5) Now it is time for your coffee pot and filter basket. Be careful; never use soap to clean these parts because soap will tie to the coffee oil residues that will, eventually, give a bizarre taste to your coffee. You can use hot soapy water instead.

Some big restaurants, coffee shops and housekeeping experts recommend baking soda and citric acid (4 tablespoons per water pot) for a meticulous cleaning of the plastic components. The calcium residues on the coffee-maker components are imminent and their quantity depends on the water hardness. There are also mixtures made from coffee-makers manufacturers that you can buy, but this is an unnecessary expense because they accomplish the same thing with the above ingredients.

How to use a coffee press

coffee shop

I just cannot get enough of coffee. I love it when I wake up in the morning and enjoy a hot cup of coffee. I love it when I am at work and the aroma of my favorite beans accompanies me. I love it when I get back home and relax in my sofa with my special coffee nectar. I do not just drink coffee. I want to enjoy the perfect cup of coffee every time of the day. In the beginning, I started with a simple drip coffee-maker. Until one evening, I went with friends to a superb, classy coffee shop where I ordered my favorite coffee. They served it to me in a bizarre glass machinery that was just enough for a cup of coffee. It seemed easy to use but not as easy as I soon find out. That was the launch of my new passion.

A French coffee press, as it is called, is the most fashionable coffee-maker in Australia and Europe. This device has a cylindrical glass carafe with a stainless brace filter to detach the coffee ground from water. The grounds remain at the bottom while the strained coffee settles over the steel filter standing by to be poured in your favorite mug.

There are few steps that will be helpful to use the coffee press in a better way in order to give you the full flavor of your mostly desired coffee beans. First of all, you need a grinder. Not just any kind of grinder. You need a good grinder. The coffee beans must be evenly ground, not in big and small pieces. You do not want boulder and dust to end up to your cup. If you choose to buy a cheap grind, you will definitely face this. Grind your coffee beans medium to coarse grind. A fine grind is not recommended because the mesh filter will not be able to hold down the coffee ground. Always purchase a good quality of beans, ideally from a local coffee store, that are freshly roasted.

Before you grind the beans, start boiling the water. This will let water to reach the desired temperature. If you pour water that has just been boiled, you will destroy the oils of your coffee beans that give you this unique taste. You do not want to boil your beans. Almost all coffee experts point out the significance of using bottled or purified water. Bottled water has no hard minerals or residues that will alter the coffee flavor in any way.

Now it is time for the basic steps.

Place your coffee pot on a smooth, non-slip surface. Hold it tightly; pull the plunger component vertically and out of the carafe.

The strength and bitterness of the coffee can be adjusted by using different quantities of water and coffee, adding sweeteners and milk as well as adding milk.
